overtime these little travelers made their wAY ACROSS THE CHANNEL TO FRANCE, AS THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION MARCHED ACROSS EUROPE AND FORCED WORKERS TO RELOCATE. IT WAS LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT! THERE QUICKLY BECAME A MARKET FOR BREEDERS OF SMALL ENGLISH BULLDOGS, OR BULLDOGS WITH UNIQUE TRAITS, LIKE EARS THAT STAND UP. WITHIN A RELATIVELY SHORT PERIOD THE BULLDOGS WERE ALMOST COMPLETELY GONE FROM ENGLAND AND A NEW BREED WAS BORN - THE Bouledogue Francais, ALSO KNOWN AS THE BELOVED FRENCH BULLDOG.
The rest is history! from renowned artists, like degas and Toulouse-latrec, to the rockefellers and the j.p. morgans, this personable and friendly companion had now hit th big time. There was even a french bulldog aboard the titatanic as it made its fateful journey across the ocean. today, frenchies have stolen the hearts of those all over the world. in 2023, the akc announced that the number one breed in the Us was the french bulldog, ousting the firmly seated and repeat winner, the labrador retriever. whats not to love about this precocious, bat-eared breed?
today's french bulldog has evolved into the number one dog in america, according to the american kennel club. low energy enough to live in apartments or small spaces, yet feisty and fun to take to social gatherings, dog parks and outside dining. this little love potato can go just about anywhere and have a wonderful time doing it. most frenchies are social butterflies and love the company of their people, other dogs and even cats! Females typically weigh in under 24 pounds, with males being a little bit bigger and bulkier and maxing out at 28 pounds.
french bulldog colors have expanded dramatically in the last decade. the akc currently only recognizes 4 colors, but in many combinations. any mix of fawn, cream, brindle and white are acceptable. many interesting and visually appealing coat types and colors have sent these exotic pup's prices soaring to never before seen numbers. isabella, a grayish/tannish color is so rare that a pup was sold for over 100k. blue, lilac, pink, black and tan and even "koi" are becoming increasingly popular. nowadays, you might even see a long haired frenchie, called a "fluffie" walking down your neighborhood street.
